The Weber County Area
A hidden gem for many years, Weber County boasts a refreshing combination of “big city” amenities, small-town charm and ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. These qualities have recently caught the collective attention of homebuyers and large corporations, providing the area with a surge of economic growth.
Located a mere 40 miles north of Salt Lake City, Weber County abounds with outdoor recreation.
Home of “the greatest snow on earth®,” northern Utah enjoys superior opportunities for skiing and snowboarding. Resorts located within an hour or two of Weber County include: Alta, Brighton, The Canyons, Deer Valley, Park City, Snowbasin, Snowbird, Solitude, Sundance and Wolf Mountain.
Snowbasin and Wolf Mountain are by far the closest, each situated near the spectacular Pineview Reservoir, which is located just up the canyon from Ogden.
The Pineview Reservoir area offers beautiful respite during the warm summer months, and is an excellent venue for both fishing and watersports. Located in the high-elevation Ogden Valley, the glassy reservoir is lined by sandy beaches, while surrounded by lush green hills and towering peaks. To call Pineview “picturesque” would be an understatement!
Down the canyon from the reservoir (toward Ogden) is the Ogden River, which provides good trout fishing. Above Pineview is the South Fork, which is popular for fly-fishing and camping.
Five other main scenic parks reside within the limits of Weber County proper, including Weber Memorial Park, Fort Buenaventura Park, North Fork Park, Willard Bay State Park and the Golden Spike National Historic Site (located northwest of Ogden). Willard Bay State Park sits along the shores of the ever-intriguing Great Salt Lake, while the Golden Spike National Historic Site commemorates the completion and intersection of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads.
For the non-outdoorsy, Weber County offers a plethora of indoor recreation opportunities. The Ice Sheet, a public skating rink, is located in Ogden and gyms abound. Those who prefer retail therapy to recreation will enjoy the diverse shopping experience in Ogden, which ranges from a large mall to quaint boutiques situated along the city’s historic streets.
Also bustling in the Ogden area are the offices of several major outdoor retailers, which have recently relocated their headquarters. Ogden has experienced significant business growth in the past few years, with future projections that appear equally as promising!
Transportation is a snap throughout the greater Weber County area. Ogden is by far the most populous town in the county and features an easily-navigable system of roads, as well as access to the Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) light rail and commuter bus systems. The remainder of the county is fairly spread out and therefore devoid of traffic, although new residents have certainly added a few cars to the road.
